Blessings in a Backpack

Each week, volunteers, in cooperation with Unit 40 school officials, distribute a bag filled with enough non-perishable food for the weekend to “at-risk” students. The goal of the program is to keep students from going hungry on the weekends and remove barriers to academic success.  United Way dollars help fund this program.

Boy Scouts of America - Lincoln Trails Council

Delivers first class scouting programs to families in Effingham County. United Way dollars are used to provide program services to existing charter partners and adult volunteers, increase youth membership and form additional partnerships, registration, books and uniforms for at-risk youth and scholarships for camp for Effingham County troops.

Catholic Charities

Provides financial, material, emotional and spiritual support to those in need in Effingham County. United Way dollars are used to fund the Food Pantry which supplements donated food and household items, and other programs that provide assistance for rent, utilities, lodging, medical and prescription costs, hot meals and transportation for low income individuals and families, and the elderly.

CEFS Golden Circle Nutrition Program

Provides older Americans with low cost, nutritionally sound meals served in strategically located centers and at home. United Way dollars are used to purchase heat sealant trays, heat packs and insulated carriers to ensure delivery of a hot meal to homebound clients.

CEFS Literacy Program

Offers services to Effingham County residents in one-to-one tutoring, including basic reading and English-as-a-second-language, family literacy programs, workplace programs, and a technically advanced computer assisted instruction program. United Way dollars are used to support literacy services provided through the Literacy Learning Center.

CEFS Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)

Offers persons of retirement age the opportunities to participate more fully in their communities through many forms of volunteer services and productive work. United Way dollars are used to provide program and supplies to support the activities such as the making of items for the elderly (wheel-chair and walker caddies, bibs and lap robes for nursing home residents, etc.).

Child Advocacy Center of East Central Illinois 

Provides a child focused, facility based program to sexually and physically abused children to help the child victim and their families throughout the judicial process, lessening the trauma and providing the best opportunity for their safety in the future.  United Way funds are used to provide these services.

Committed to elevating the quality of life for those in need in Effingham County. Utilizes United Way funds to provide shoe vouchers, school supplies and new backpacks and eye exams and glass for children in preschool through eighth grade who qualify.

Assists in search and rescue or search and recovery of missing persons. United Way dollars are used to purchase vital field communication tools to maintain contact during searches, and the future purchase of rescue equipment for the SAR K-9 team that is equipped to promote safety and efficiency when time is of the essence.
